I've been trying to piece together the Crane/Crain families of SC in order to fit in my gggg-grandmother, Mary Jane "Jennie" Crane. She was called as a witness in an inheritance dispute involving children of one William Crane and wife Ophelia Suggs, daughter of Jesse Suggs. A distant relative was told that Jennie's and William's descendants were related and we're suspecting that they were brother and sister. My ggg-grandfather was Jennie's son, James Crain/Crane, who you mentioned was possibly related to the John who married Elizabeth Black. In 1850 Pickens Co., SC, James is next door to Jesse Suggs' daughter who his next door to his widow (2nd wife), and four pages from Coleby and a different John Crane. His brother, Jeptha Crane, is on the same page as John and Eliza Black Crane, and a page away from Tillman Crain (although, Tillman's surname may be read differently - might not be Crain). You've probably seen the Old Pendleton Database that shows Eliza Black's John to be the son of Philemon Patrick Crane, but it also shows incorrectly that some of Jennie's children were his, also. [I e-mailed Mr. Geschwin regarding that before he died, but he hadn't kept track of who submitted the data (or at least didn't remember).] So, that association may be suspect. Furthermore, Philemon Patrick appears to be part of Ambrose Crane's group, whose line isn't connected with Ophelia Suggs' William Crane according to Y-DNA tests. (I was going to include a link, but it seems to be "broken".) As for Hiram, do you mean Hiram H. Crane (b. 1804)? For the time being, I'm associating him with a William Crain (married Elizabeth McEntire) of NC, who apparently had a brother named Hiram. So far, I haven't connected them with other Cranes or Crains. I hope some of this helps, or at least leads to something that does. Any comments or suggestions would be appreciated (thanks!).
