In Reply to: Obituary of Frank Craighead, Oct. 2001, age 85 by Linda (Noland) Layman of 485

This obituary was for Frank Cooper Craighead, Jr. Frank's parents were Frank Cooper Craighead, Sr. (died around 1982), and Carolyn Johnson Craighead (died at age 103 or 104 in the early- to mid-1990's). Both were naturalists and they "retired" to the Everglades, where they continued their work to preserve nature - if you see books or articles related to southern Florida and the Everglades listed on amazon.com or elsewhere, these would be written by Frank, Sr.

Frank, Jr.'s, twin brother is John Johnson Craighead, and his younger sister is Jean Craighead George, world-famous children's author - both are still living. Frank and John wrote many books and articles, both separately and together, and all three of these Craigheads can be found all over amazon.com. The twins also filmed two National Geographic specials in the 1950s or 1960s (I think one about the Grizzlies is from 1967).

Most of Frank, John, and Jean's children and grandchildren have gone on to be very involved with wildlife research and preservation, and most of Frank and John's family members now live in Wyoming, in and around the Jackson Hole area. You can find lots of information about the family by googling any of their names (use quotation marks around items that should appear together in a particular order, such as "Jean Craighead George"). You could also try switchboard.com or intelius.com to find basic information about who lives where. Jean and her daughter Twig (also a children's author) also have websites. This is an absolutely fascinating family!!

Jean's interesting autobiography, JOURNEY INWARD, though out of print, can be purchased quite cheaply on amazon.com, half.com, or other used book websites. There is also a biography of her by Alice Cary, which varies in price, but is well worth the investment of time and money.

Some of my students and I are scheduled to interview Jean Craighead George in April, and along with information on Jean's children / grandchildren, I would like to include information on her brothers and their descendents in our article. I have come up with a decent amount of information on them, but if anyone is able to give me a fairly detailed family tree of all of Frank, Sr.'s, descendents, it would be greatly appreciated.
