Allie Haines Crago, Carmel, Indiana
Allie Haines Crago, daughter of John A. and Rose Haines, was born November 18, 1880 and departed this life May 15,1923...On September 19, 1900, she was united in marriage to W.D. Crago. This union proved a very happy one. Allie was born and spent her childhood and youth at Carmel. Here she attended the public schools until she graduated from High School. From very early childhood she showed an independence of thought and action. She planned her own clothes, learned her own lessons, wrote her graduating essay without the help of any one. Immediately after their marriage, she and her husband removed to Indianapolis where they have since resided. At least 19 years ago she joined the College Avenue Baptist Church of which she has been a faithful and consistent member. For many years she has belonged to the Meridian WCTU, serving as secretary most efficiently for some time. She was also a member of the Broad Ripple Eastern Star. During the period of the World War she was an active and untiring worker in the cause of humanity. All who knew Allie were her friends, for to know her was to love her. From childhood to the end of her short but happy life, she was like a sunbeam wherever she went. Her smile and her happy, cherrie ways made every one who knew her happier because of having known her. Allie found this life a happy one and this world a beautiful place to live and through her life she spread sunshine all about her. Life is easier and better because she has lived and gone smiling thru all her days. This slender life runs rippling by and glides into the silent hollows of the Past. What is there that abides to make life better because we have lived? Allie has shown to all of us that it is a pleasant smile, a cheering word, a kind deed that will keep alive the memory of a good woman. (From Indianapolis Star)
