Thanks for answering, Paul. My ggg g'father was William John Leary Cracknell b 1832 England. He had a brother Edward Charles b 1831. Their parents were Edward Edmund Cracknell and Emma Thompson. Edward and william both had distinguished careers in Australia in Posts and Telegraphs.
William left England in 1854 as Second officer on the "Polar Star", it burned and sank in mid Atlantic, everyone was fortuitously saved by a passing ship and taken to St Helena Island. From there they returned to England, he then went to NZ on the "Cresswell" the following year. Left NZ with wife and 2 daughters in 1860, died in Bondi, Sydney, in 1906. There is a Cracknell Road in Brisbane named after him, his brother Edward has a big post on the Australian Dictionary of Biography, on the net.
Thanks for you interest,
