Replying to Nigel Penton Tilbury .
Hello , my name is David Oliver , and I live a few miles down the road from you in Cambridge . I found your note and wondered if you might have a connection with my wife's family . She is a Penton - a surprisingly uncommon name . I had a bit of research done on her family. Her father's maternal grandfather , Edward Penton , married a Sarah Emily Cracknell , born 1851. She was apparently a pretty daunting character and a portrait of her still exists in the family. Edward, born 1846, was the second generation of a prosperous firm of leather goods merchants and lived in London. The family business eventually foundered in the late 1920's depression. I would have thought that with a Cracknell in your ancestry and a Penton in your name there is probably some connection , although I can't quite see the causal link which would have caused Penton to be imported into your name. Maybe your Emma was Sarah Emily Cracknell's niece , in which case her cousin would have been my wife's grandfather , Sir Edward Penton, born 1875. Ring any bells ?
