Here is all the information I have gathered over the years, and I mean, YEARS of research on Ritty Crabtree. She's a mysterious woman!
From what I gather from all the info. below is that...
Henrietta Charity Ritty was born a Roberts (DNA Proven). Not sure who the father is... no one is sharing that tidbit. Mother is unknown. She married James Crabtree, who killed a man, there for ran from Virginia and hid out in the hills of Pike County. He was never heard from again.
Ritty came to Pike County Kentucky, where the Roberts, her kin, were living.
James Crabtree and Ritty had two daughters, Susanna (1821) and Mary Polly (1824).
After James disappeared, she started to have babies with James Roberts Jr. He was related to her, but not sure how... probably a cousin.... 1st, 2nd or 3rd. Not sure.
They had James (1828), Nancy (1830), JOHN (1833), Elizabeth (1834), Wilson (1835), William (1838), Winna ?, Henry (1842) and Harvey (1844).
I descend from James Roberts Jr. and Ritty's son, John Yankee Crabtree and Sarah Ann Keathley.
All I can say is good luck and happy hunting!!!

I'm not an authority on the families but I have spent many, many years researching
Henrietta Crabtree and believe the one in Calloway Co., KY is the daughter of Thomas and Rebecca (Ragsdale) Yates.
The Henrietta Crabtree in Pike Co., KY was a Roberts by maiden name and not married to a Roberts.
If you would like more info, feel free to contact me and I'll help in any way a can
on the two women.
GenForum 2 April. 2000 Rick Cottrell’s #1154 reply to Garnett Anderson’s request for information on James Crabtree and Henrietta Roberts marriage.
Garnett:
Thanks for the reply.
Yes there seems to be quite a bit of intrigue and mystery and tales about this Ritta Crabtree from Pike Co., KY.
One thing she is not is a daughter of Thomas and Rebecca (Ragsdale) Yates from Robertson Co., TN.
I have not found Ritta Crabtree in Pike Co., KY as widow in the 1820 census. Only found her in the 1830, 1840, and 1850 census. None of them ever refer to her as a widow.
I know that another researcher told me that her marriage was confirmed to James Robert, Jr in the LDS files and that made it correct.
Well the only item that pertains to Ritta Crabtree and James Roberts, Jr in the LDS records is that they were supposedly married in 1820 Pike Co., KY. That record was not taken from any court record it was what someone had submitted.
That info seems kind of peculiar since Ritta Crabtree is Ritta Crabtree for 20 plus years in Pike Co., KY and her last child Harvey is a Crabtree born in 1844 KY.
It is ironic that you would have stories about a James Crabtree in your family fleeing from VA.
You may want to check these records:
James Crabtree
1820 Census Pg. 201 Washington Co., VA
James Roberts, Jr.
1820 Census Pg. 228 Washington Co., VA
A descendent, Bill McKinney, told me several years ago that he thought James Crabtree and Henrietta Roberts married in Pike Co., KY.
However I think they married in Washington Co., VA.
I also think that Henrietta Crabtree is the daughter of the James Roberts, Jr. in Washington Co., VA.

GenForum from Marlene Perry 24 April 2000 #1201 reply to Rick Cottrell’s Henrietta ‘Ritta’ Confusion
I have researched Henrietta "Ritty" Crabtree since 1976. She is definetly not the one in Callaway Co, Ky. Her parents are definetly not Yates. From what my Gr. Aunt told me her Grandfather, John, son of Ritty, and her father in law, Henry, son of Ritty they all BaseBorn as she put it. (born out of wedlock). My Grandmother even said they were Baseborn. My gr.Grandfather, Henry, was not a very reputable man and he switched the names of his parents on his 2nd marriage in Law. Co. Ohio. He put his parents as James Crabtree and Henrietta Roberts.
My Gr. Aunt told me of a brother they had by the name of Daniel Roberts. He was a half brother. I have a letter from a Lawrence Branham of Pike Co. Ky confirming this as he is a decendant of Daniel Roberts. The children was apparently ashamed of this as you will not find any of thier death certificates stating their parents names. (Ritty's children).
In 1820 Census of Floyd Co. Ky you will find a Reece Crabtree with 2 females. He is the ONLY Crabtree in Floyd Co., Ky in 1820 and in 1821 that part of Floyd became Pike Co.,KY in 1830 is when Ritty appears in the Pike Co., Census. I believe the two females in the census for Reece could have been Ritty and her sister Nancy that married Hiram Boney. Reece apparently died or moved on somewhere else. He disappeared also. Ritty has not been found after the 1850 census. James Roberts, Senior died if I remember correctly in 1855 and I think James Roberts, Jr.'s wife may have insisted she leave as the old gentleman was the one who apparently really looked after all the children .

I will try to dispell some of the myths concerning Ritty Crabtree, while trying to find more about her. HenriettaCharity "Ritty" Crabtree was my great grandmother, mother of James Crabtree, my grandfather. Although I have her name as "Henrietta" in my book, I have not found proof that her name was Henrietta at all. I also have her name as Charity which I lean toward, and her nickname was Ritty or Rittie.
My Mother told me her name was Ritty and the best I can remember I heard her call her Charity. I had never heard her called Henrietta until some researchers told me that was her name. I dont think there is proof in Pike county where she lived that her name was Henrietta. If so I would like to see it. Some may have confused her with Henrietta (Yates) Crabtree. I am not saying her name was not Henrietta, Ijust haven't found proof.
I have seen her name as Henrietta, Charity, Betty, Mary, among others.
I was told a story as a child by my mother that her grandmother was an Indian baby found under a crabapple tree and that is why they called her last name CRABTREE. This is told only as a story and not for truth, and is probablly only another story passed down.
I was told by Lawerence Branham, a descendant of James Roberts, Sr., that Ritty came to Pike County from Virginia when she was a little girl in the early 1800's. She and her family came into Ky about the same time the Roberts family did. When she and James Roberts, Jr. were very young, they started dating and having children. They never married but did have several children. In fact James Jr. was married twice and had children by several women according to Lawerence Branham and Rodney Vietschegger, a well known researcher.
At any rate the story goes that Ritty left Kentucky in or around 1850 and went back to Virginia. That is about the time my grandfather, James Crabtree came to Virginia and settled on what was later called "Crabtree Fork" which was then in Russell County, later Wise and now Dickenson County, Virginia.
Ritty's children was given the name of Crabtree, her maiden name, instead of Roberts.
It seems noone has seen hide nor hair of her since she came back to Virginia. She may be buried at the Crabtree cemetery on the old Crabtree farm, Crabtree fork, with no marker.
Ritty could not be a child of James Roberts, Jr. as they were about the same age, in fact Jimmy Jr. was probably younger than Ritty.
I have the children of Ritty Crabtree, grandchildren, etc. in my book called, "The Crabtree-Stanley Collection, A Memorial."

Hi, I am the ggg grandaughter of Henrietta Ritty Crabtree Roberts. I did a DNA test that is only supposed to pull up the mother to mother DNA and none of the fathers ever. I pulled up Roberts DNA which means that This DNA was already in Henriettas bloodline before she had children with Roberts Jr.Rittys daughter Elizabeth Crabtree Roberts married William Ratliff and moved to Mo. and their daughter Amanda Annie Louisa Ratliff was my g grandmother. The story is true on Ritty and Roberts Jr. He fathered 63 children with 2 wives and 3 consorts. Ritty was his consort. WE have proven our ancestory through Price and Assoc of Utah.

I have a Susanna Crabtree that was married to Peter Johnson. Her mother was Henrietta Crabtree, father not known. The children of Henrietta are:
1. Susanna Crabtree, b. Dec. 4, 1821
2. Mary "Polly" Crabtree, b. 1824
3. James S. Crabtree, b. June 1828
4. Nancy Crabtree, b. 1825-1830
5. John Crabtree, b. Feb. 13, 1833 (my g.g.g.-grandfather)
6. Elizabeth Crabtree, b. 1834
7. Wilson Crabtree, b. 1835
8. William Crabtree, b. 1838
9. Winna Crabtree, (no information)
10. Henry Crabtree, b. Aug. 18, 1842
11. Harvey Crabtree, b. Feb. 3, 1844
Supposedly the father of her children from James on was John Robert Jr. of Pike County, they were not married.
When Susanna and Peter were married, the consent that was
signed by Henrietta Crabtree and John Robert Sr. stating..."a girl I raised since birth". Peter was born about 1820 and died Feb. 2, 1893. After Susanna died Peter married Cynthia Ann Alexander in Missouri. They are found in the 1860 and 1870 Reynolds Co., Missouri census. I have more info if this is your Susanna and Peter.

Henrietta Charity Crabtree: This is my GGG Grandmother. We do know who her father was for certain! She and her two younger siblings were left with WM.Ratliff SR. as her guardian and it is WM.Ratliff that placed her with James Roberts.Later WM. The last child born to GGG grandfather Family Cousins!Understand that the Roberts,Crabtree,Ratliff, all have Cherokee Blood in several of the grandmothers. When a Cherokee woman no longer felt her man was not to her expectations she left the man with the children and found another man.The woman ruled the roost. My other family is Roger ,Parker, Ward, Vann,Owl.... JUDITH_DOMMERGUE46 Henrietta Crabtree: My ggg grandmothers father is proven by Researchers at Price and Assoc. along with other family documentation not on the ancetrys site. The jury is out on who the mother was and that is why I am trying to find as many family members as possible to be DNA tested.,with ww.familytreedna.com,There are Roberts Children off of my GGG grand father who are Henrietta Crabtree"s sons who are thinking that they are off of the legally married wives and they are not! Our direct line Crabtree and Roberts family Males and Females need to be DNA tested to see who we all are really off of. This Crabtree grand daughter is an unbroken Mother to daughter line of Crabtree females. I would not pick up my fathers DNA only mother to mother. DNA has to be manipulated to prove who daddy was!
