Jacques Cossart arrived at New Amsterdam in October of 1662 aboard the ship "Purmerlander Kerek." On March 19, 1663 he petitioned for a grant of land and seed. On April 1, 1663 he and his wife Lea and their two daughters were received into the Reformed Dutch Church of New Amsterdam. In October of 1664 Jacques (the Dutch called hm Jacob)took an oath of allegiance to Great Britian, following the capture of New Netherlands by England. He was eventually given a job of tax collector and purchased a home just northeast of the fort. This property is now the site of the Two Broadway Building. Following the recapture of the fort by the Dutch in 1675, Jacques moved to a small farm in Bushwick, Long Island. He died there about 1684-85 and his body was buried in the "ancient graveyard" of the early Buswick settlers. This area was later used as a building site and the bones were buried in a collective grave near the old Bushwick church
