Most of the early historical information that I have on this line was provided by my father's cousin, Claude Fleming and by Martha Cozart Heafner, whom I met in 1991 on one of Prodigy's message boards. I believe that some of this information is from the research done by Louise Trotti (in the 1930s) and by Edmund James, who was a descendant of Anthony Cossart. His work included references to a connection with the Du Pont Family Genealogy as well as some early Cossarts in France, including Radulphe Cossart, 'bourgeois' of La Fere, who acquired a tract of land in the year 1224.

Outline of Cozart-Cossart Genealogy

In October 1662, the good ship Pumertander Kirche landed her passengers in the harbor of New Amsterdam (now New York) among the passengers were the French Huguenot emigrants Jacques de Cossart, his wife Lydia (Williams), two children and the first of the Goelet family - Peter or Jacob Goelet.
Jacques Cossart settled in New Amsterdam, and in 1663, he was made treasurer of the fund for the payment of the soldiers and clergy. This office he held when the English took possession and he remained in office a year afterwards.
He then removed to the site of the present city in Brooklyn. There were born to him, after coming to America, the following children:
1. Janet------who married Jacob Goelet.
2. Jacques Jr., born April 11, 1666; married Anna M. Sprinster.
3.David, born June 16, 1671, died 1740; md. Slaintiat George.
4. Anthony, born November 19, 1675; md. Elizabeth Valentine Tymenson (July 17, 1696)
In 1712, Anthony Jr. and wife Elizabeth Valentine Tymenson left home in Brooklyn and joined relatives in the new settlement at Raritan, New Jersey. Anthony's brother, Jacob, had settled at Bound Brook.
On August 6, 1712, a son, Anthony 2nd, was born and baptized "into The Dutch Reformed Church of Raritan". See records of that church. These same church records show that this Anthony 2nd was married about 1735. The record says, "his wife Wilpe - or Wilhemena." They offered for baptism their son, Anthony 3rd., February 4, 1739.
Now Anthony 3rd., is known in this record as "Anthony of North Carolina." Why he went down to North Carolina is not known, but he acquired large holdings of land in Granville County, where he paid taxes in 1754. The records show that there was much passing back and forth between New Jersey and North Carolina, but they fail to show when Anthony 3rd and his wife - Wilhelmena?) - where married, but it is presumed that it occured in New Jersey. However, record of his second wife "Nancy" (?) appears on the North Carolina records.
The sons of Anthony 3rd and his wife Wilhelmena are:
David; Anthony 4th; JACOB; James; John; Simon; Elias.
Anthony served in the Revolutionary War with several of his sons. He died in Granville County, as the Court records show, between the date of his will, December 23, 1780 and the May term of Court 1781.
Jacob, the third son of Anthony of Granville, married a "Miss Williams", presumably of Granville County; no dates are attainable; but the Church record of "Raritan First Reform Church" states that "Jacobes and Elizabet Cozart offer for baptism a daughter, Catlinte, December 25, 1772." The following children are on record in Granville County:
Benjamine; Thomas; Williams; James; Hubbard (Herbert) and Jamima.
Williams Cozart, born in Granville County, NC, 1761, died 1836. Williams Cozart married Holly Mangum, Aunt of Wiley Person Mangum, US Senator from North Carolina for 18 years. The children of Williams and Holly Cozart were:
1. David, died in Tennessee.
2. Hubbard (Herbert?), born in North Carolina---, married Anne Turner of Hancock County, Georgia and died in April 1865.
3. Fannie, born in NC----married--Carrington of Virginia, died in Texas.
4. Wiley, born in NC, named for Senator Wiley Mangum, died young.
5. William Mangum, norn in NC, married Sarah Murray. Moved to Columbus, Miss., died and is buried there.
6. Green Person, born in NC moved to Wilkes County, Georgia; married Mary Pettus. Died in 1879.

Green Person Cozart is my great-great grandfather. He was born 10/27/1804 in Granville County, North Carolina, believed to have gone to school in Virginia at Washington & Lee and moved to Wilkes County, Georgia in 1820. Note that Elias Cozart was granted 200 acres of land near Washington, Georgia after the Revolutionary War. I believe that Green and his brother William were in the general merchandise/racket(?) store business in Washington, Georgia. Cozart Binns & Co.
Green Person Cozart married on 10/11/1849 to Mary Rebecca Pettus (who was born 2/2/1818 and died 2/26/1899).
Green Person Cozart died 7/10/1879.

His son, John Pettus Cozart was born 8/20/1850 married on 11/22/1876 to Frances Louisa “Fannielu” Anderson (who was born 12/29/1853 and died 11/5/1937). She was daughter of William Quarles & wife, Sophia (Walker) Anderson. John Pettus Cozart died 12/1/1891.

I believe that John Pettus Cozart had a brother, William and a sister, Annie, who married Archibald Baker.

The children of John Pettus and Fannielu Anderson Cozart (not in order of birth) were:
1. Anderson Green "Buddy" Cozart (druggist) born 12/30/1879 died 3/21/1917 buried in Washington, Ga. md. Amoret Dawson.
2. John Milton Cozart b. 10/24/1886; d.2/26/1952 m. April 1916 Sarah WRAY
3. Mary R. Cozart born 12/28/1877 Augusta, Ga. married on 1/3/1906 to Samuel Fleming GARLINGTON. She died November 1949.
4. Frances Louisa "Fannielu" Cozart born 1/9/1891 died 2/1/1952 buried in Washington, Ga.
5. Annie Victoria Cozart born 2/19/1882 married November 1912 to Claude A. Fleming of Augusta, Georgia - children Tom & Claude
6. Thomas William Cozart born 4/29/1884, married on 10/12/1929 to Rachael Lucretia KEITH (who was born 4/20/1902 and died 9/20/1977). Thomas William Cozart was a cotton merchant and a broker in the oil sales & distribution business and lived in Columbia, SC. Their only child was my father Thomas William Cozart, Jr. Thomas William Cozart, Sr. died 9/17/1959.

Notes on the Cozart Records.
"Jaques Cossart (Cousseau - the Dutch way of spelling), was a merchant in La Rochelle, France, before he emigrated and became a shipping merchant in New Amsterdam, and a prominent man in the comunity." (See New Jersey Historical Quarterly - Somerset County - Records - Vol. I, page 109; Vol. II, p. 324; also Index). For baptisms, etc. See Records of The Dutch Reformed Church of Raritan, NJ; also Historical Records of Bound Brook, NJ. Here, two Cozzarts - George and David - were among the settlers of this Grant. See Chamber's "Early Germans of New Jersey." Near Bound Brook was a family burying ground of the Cossarts; here was buried Jacob, brother of "Anthony of Granville County, NC. It was his tombstone that was ruthlessly removed, when a railroad was projected through this burying place. It is said that this tombstone was set up beside the "right of way" until some patriotic D.A.R.'s rescued it.
See Records of New Amsterday from 1653 to 1674, edited by Berthold Fernow; Vol. V., pp 4 - 352.
See records of Granville County, NC, "Revolutionary War Roster of Soldiers". Anthony and sons, David, Anthony 4th and Jacob are on record as answering to "roster", and again their SIGNATURES are set to the "Oath of Allegiance to the American Cause." Also, on these Granville records appears the name of Nancy Cozart, second wife of Anthony; also a record of his will - 1781.
See Baird's History of the Huguenot Emigration, 1657, 1662, 1663. See Davis' "First Houses of Bound Brook." (Vol. I., p.162)
1. Jannetje (Janette) born November 28, 1665, married Jan. 10, 1688, Jacob Gollet, of New Amsterdam, founder of the celebrated multimillionaire family of Gollets of New York and Newport.
2. Jacob Cossart, born April 11, 1668, married Anne Marie Springster.
3. David Cossart, born June 18, 1671, married Stejntie Van Hoorn, October 11, 1696.
4. Anthony Cossart, born November 19, 1673, married Aug. 2, 1666, Elizabeth Valentine, daughter of John Valentine, son of Timothy Valentine, of Schenectady, NY. They were the Valentine family that were the first proprietors (Valentine Hill, Yonkers, NY)
This is the son from whom the Granville County Cossarts descended. Anthony and his wife sold their home in Brooklyn (Bushwick) March 2, 1703 and removed to Bound Brook, NJ now the city of Raritan.
Their children were as follows: Jacob, born in Brooklyn, October 16, 1701, Lea, date of birth not known.
Anthony, born August 6, 1712, married Wilhelmia ______ had the following sons: David, Anthony 3rd, Jacob, James, John, Simon, Peter and Elias. He married the second time, Nancy ______ and by her had the following sons: Jessie, Joshua, and Jeremiah. He emigrated to Granville County, NC in 1753 and settled on Hampton's Hill Creek, where he died June 13, 1792.
Jacob Cossart, married Miss ______ Williams of Wake County, NC. Their children were Benjamin, Thomas, Williams, James, Hubbard and a daughter, Jamima.
NOTE: Jacob Cossart before his death adopted the present mode of spelling the name COZART in 1760. Though the first settlers in this County used the ancient name of Cossart.
William Cozart, born in Granville County, NC, 1761 died in 1838, married Miss Holly Mangum, daughter of Arthur Mangum, of Orange County and by her had the following children:
1. David Cozart, married Mary Carrington of Orange County, daughter of Nathaniel Carrington, died in Tennessee.

7. Clarry Cozart, married Allen Waller of Granville County, NC, her daughter Adeline, married John Floyd Wright.
The entire Cozart family of the South now spell the name Cozart, with the exception of the decendants of Anthony Third, who spell it Cozort, though their ancestor, brother to Jacob from whom we descended spelled his name Cozart.
