There are indeed, many spelling derivations of the Cozart name. Early on, the name was spelled as Cossart or Cosart. Many derivations came later - I am not sure they were due to poor spelling. For instance, Cassatt was the derivation for several generations descended from Francis Cosart (1717-1795), although some of his descendants also retained Cossart, or changed to Cossairt, Cosat and Cossat.
The Cozad branch seems to have been started by the sons of Jacob Cosart (1701-1772). Jacob Jr (1724-1812) was a Baptist minister who pre-empted 1000 acres on the Cheat River in what is now West Virginia in 1770. His descendants continued to move West - Jacob III, for instance, died in Ohio. Jacob Jr's brothers Samuel and Job also used the derivation COZAD for their children; while brother Anthony began the CASAD line. It seems that the COZART (with a Z) derivation came from the Granville County area of North Carolina, although I have some information that at least one CASAD family may have used that spelling as well.
I am sure there are many more expert than I concerning these derivatives. My mother's mother was a COZART in the area of Granville County that became Person County NC. I simply collected notes as I was doing my research - taking interest how broad the family had become.
