Dear Deb, I'm 99% sure you're not looking for Whalans! I live in the S.E of Ireland and am not familiar with the surname but I can certainly say that Whelan (Wheel an) should be the correct pronunciation. I have often heard people say Whalan when the surname is actually spelt 'Whelan'. It's all to do with the accent!I have often come across Irish surnames (for example on ellis Island site)and I wonder what sort of an Irish name is that until I try to pronounce it and then it clicks!
