Rachel Coxhead married George Chivers at St. Mary’s Church, Ashbury, Berkshire, on 15th October 1818 after Banns, with John Miller, the curate of Bishopstone officiating. The witnesses were Fanny Cousins and Sarah Chivers. Fanny Cousins would later marry George’s brother Thomas. Sarah Chivers was probably George’s cousin. Rachel would appear to have been expecting at the time of marriage, as their first child, Sarah, was baptised on 30th May 1819 at Hungerford, Berkshire. George and Rachel Chivers were moved to Hungerford, Berkshire, UK, by order of the Magistrates at Ashbury, under an order dated 5 January 1819. A copy of this order is at the Berkshire PRO. This order was granted under the Poor Laws, which required a parish to support its own poor, but gave the local magistrates the power to order people not from the parish to be returned to their parish of birth. Since we are fairly happy that George was born at Ashbury on 5th June 1797, Rachel must have been born in Hungerford, Berkshire. There were a number of ‘Coxhead’ families in Hungerford at this time, but there is no Rachel Coxhead recorded as being born or baptised in the parish. After 1835, the Poor Law Union for Hungerford included several other parishes, including Chilton Foliat and Albourne, both villages a few miles north-west of Hungerford in Wiltshire. I don’t know what the arrangements were before 1835. On 11th March 1798 the IGI records a Rachel Coxhead baptised at Aldbourne, the daughter of John Coxhead and Miriam Barrett. The second child of George and Rachel chivers is recorded as being ‘Marianne’. John Coxhead who married Miriam Barrett at Aldbourne on 23rd October 1796, was baptised at Hungerford on 1st October 1766, the son of John Coxhead and Mary Cannon, who married at Hungerford on 23 December 1762. It would seem quite possible for Rachel to have been born at Hungerford even though she was baptised at Aldbourne. Miriam Barret was baptised at Aldbourne on 19th October 1767, the daughter of Stephen Barrett and Sarah Dash. Most of this data is based on the IGI at present although I am working on getting alternative authentication at the moment. Notify Administrator about this message?
