John Cox of Monroe Co. TN
Monroe County Observer, (Monroe Co. TN) June 30, 1976:
“New Mexico Reader Seeks Ancestral Info---’I have been working on my family genealogy, and so have been interested in your area, since so many of my father’s families were in your county,’ says Mrs. LaVelle Cox Hogg, 232 New Mexico Drive, Portales, New Mexico 88130, in a letter to the editor today.
Her letter goes on to say:
‘I am wondering if your newspaper is publishing a Bicentennial issue? If so, I would be very interested in obtaining a copy, as I feel that this would provide an insight into early Monroe County history.
‘My great grandparents, John Cox and Letitia Calfee Cox settled in Monroe County near Madisonville about 1828 when my grandfather, Tipton Cox, was only a few years old. Tipton Cox grew up in Monroe County and served in the Mexican War, enlisting in nearby Athens, after which he was married o Eliza Jane Wilson, born 1829 and a native of Monroe County. She was the daughter of John Wilson and wife, Jane G. Hayes Wilson.
‘My great grandmother, Jane Hayes Wilson, is buried in Harrell Cemetery near Madisonville.
‘I would surely be interested in hearing from anyone connected in any way to these early Cox, Calfee, Wilson, Hayes or other related families who may still be living in the area.
‘And if you are publishing a Bicentennial issue of the Monroe County Observer, please advise me the cost of a copy. Thanks.”
