Philip Cox 1763-1841 Augusta Co, VA
I have seen a lot of intermingling of information on two different men named Philip Cox of Virginia.
The Philip Cox of Somerset, NJ was born about 1760, the son of Isaac Cox.Philip and Isaac relocated after the Revolutionary War and ended up in Lewis & Harrison Counties in Virginia.Philip is listed on the 1850 census in Harrison County with his wife Christiana. He died 29 Oct 1854 and is buried in the Old Cox Cemetery at Slab Creek, Ritchie Co, W.Va.Lewis, Harrison and Ritchie Counties are among those counties in western Virginia which "seceded" from the Confederate state of Virginia in 1863, during the Civil War, and were admitted to the Union as the "new" state of West Virginia. This Philip Cox and his father Isaac were among those men investigated in Lewis County regarding the fraudulent filing of Revolutionary War pension claims.
The Philip Cox of Augusta County was born about 15 November 1763.His birth date is calculated by dating back from his age at the date of his death on 30 Jan 1841.He is buried in Augusta Co, VA.He was married to Ana Mary Wiseman, not to be confused with her sister Mary Eve Wiseman. He is listed on Augusta County census records from 1810 through 1840.His birthplace and parentage have apparently not been determined, but he appears to have come to Virginia from PA.
