Valley Times-News, The (Lanett, AL) - April 10, 2003 Deceased Name: Mrs. Dahlia Cox of Decatur DECATUR, Ga. -- Mrs. Dahlia Cox of Decatur, formerly of Lanett, died Tuesday, April 8, 2003. A funeral service is scheduled for Saturday, April 12 at 2 p.m. in the A.S. Turner & Sons Chapel in Decatur with the Rev. Tavye Morgan officiating. Burial will follow in the Decatur Cemetery. Mrs. Cox is survived by two sons, Randy (Betty) Cox of Lilburn, and Chris (Diana) Cox of Mobile, Ala.; her daughter, Ramona (Richard) Mays of Roswell; her sister, Jewell King of Newnan; her brother, John Mack Sorrell of Lanett; six grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. Born Feb. 1, 1923 in Lanett, Mrs. Cox graduated from Lanett High School and attended Piedmont College and Georgia State University. She married Louis Purcell Cox in 1947 and bought a home on Adair St. in Decatur. Mrs. Cox worked with children for 60 years. She started teaching kindergarten at Pattillo Memorial United Methodist Church, and in 1959 she and Mary Atkins opened the kindergarten at Oak Grove United Methodist Church. She remained there for 25 years, retiring in 1984 after serving as kindergarten director for the last 12 years. Mrs. Cox then became an assistant teacher at Fifth Avenue Elementary School (pre-K) until the late 1990s, when she retired for good. She was a member of Avondale-Pattillo United Methodist Church. Mrs. Cox was the daughter of the late Forney and Mary Lou Sorrell. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Avondale-Pattillo United Methodist Church. The family will receive friends Thursday and Friday, April 10 and 11 from 5 until 8 p.m. at A.S. Turner & Sons in Decatur. A.S.
