From the Laurel 1902 & 1903 and Ellisville 1890-1898 newspapper books by Strickland & Edwards. (Jones County MS)
Ellisville Paper.....
Sat, Oct 3, 1896..."Mr G W Cowley's Confederate pension has been approved."
Sat, Mar 8, 1897..."Rev. Mr. Keen and G W Cowley had a fight. The Rev knocked Mr. Cowley out.
Sat , Dec 18, 1897...Rev F M Keen will preach his farewell sermon tomorrow." (The Rev. Keen was later transferred to a Methodist church in Meridian, Ms.)
Laurel paper.....
Fri, Nov 12, 1902....."Mrs Lockett of New Orleans is visiting her brother, Mr Cowley, on Plum St."
Feb 28, 1903.."Mr G W Cowley had a small piece of minnie ball removed from his nose that he received 42 years ago in a battle at Dranesville, Va. Another ball struck him through the bridge of his nose, putting out his right eye. He was discharged but re-enlisted in the 10th Alabama and served until captured." (no wonder the Rev Keen could knock him out!)
Laurel paper.....
Wed, May 11, 1903.."A J Cowley of Rogers, Tx, came for the reunion and to visit his brother, G W Cowley, of Plum St. The first time the brothers have met since the war."
From the census, his first wife was Celia, they married about 1888. It was his first marriage and her second. Celia died in 1907 and is buried at Windham Cemetery in Jones Co. She was first married to a Thomas Coats who died in 1888. The Emma mentioned in another post was his second wife and as far as I can tell G W Cowley had no children. In 1910 he and Emma lived on 13th Ave. Emma had been married to a Glass.
