Dear David,
My great-great-great grandparents
were Martin Cowley and Mary Doherty. My line goes through their son Martin born Nov. 9th 1830. The earliest recorded record of Martin
Cowley and Mary Dohertys children was Catherine born july 17 1823. I do not have a Stephen listed but if your not positve of the 1823 date he could have been born before the records started in 1823. As for Sligo , I always say Mayo , the part of Mayo were their son Martin was born the townland of Rathmeel was once part of Sligo. Would like to exchange info with you, for I'm sure were talking about the same Martin Cowley and Mary Doherty.

Sincerely, Eugene M. Cowley
