A biography/family history of Roy J. Cowles, attorney, is included in "Montana, Its Story and Biography", Vol 3, pages 1113 & 1114. His paternal grandfather, Demarcus L. Cowles, born in NY, was one of the very early settlers of Minnesota. Father of Roy Cowles: Eddy Cowles, born in MN, homesteaded in Moody County, SD. Returned to West Concord, MN, to farm. Mother of Roy: Cora Vanderhyde, daughter of John and Nellie (Horn) Vanderhyde, both born in Holland. Children: Roy J. (Fairview, MT), Nellie (Mrs. Albert Theda, Roundup, MT), Harry & Harold (twins farming near West Concord, MN), Margaret (West Concord, MN). Roy J. Cowles graduated from West Concord High School in 1903 and taught for a year in South Dakota and a year in Minnesota. Attended Hamline University and graduated from the law department of the University of Minnesota in June 1909. On 23 Jan 1913, he opened the first law department in Fairview, MT. On 14 Nov 1912, in Minnesota, Roy married Miss Lillian Bennett, daughter of B.E. Bennett, a Norwegian by birth, and Anna Enemark, a native of Denmark.
