Farmington CT 9 miles southwest of Hartford. by 22 jan 1666 he owned 107 acres at Farmington, prop
recorded 8 nov 1678 as belonging to his son Samuel Cowles, John being deceased. Was Constable at
Farmington. One of 7 organizers of church 13 oct 1652. Deputy to General Court 1653/4; He removed to
Hartford by 1656; April 1653 signed petition requesting settlement of Nonotuck, later to become N-S-W-
and East Hampton, Hatfield & Montgomery MA. 1660 removed to Hatfield. 1661, 1664 returned to
Hartford where he received allotments. Was juror at the witchcraft trials of Nathaniel and Rebecca
Greensmith 12/1662, and Mary Barnes 1/1663. Greensmith was executed for witchcraft 25 jan 1663,
and Cowles served as the appraiser of the inventory of the estate 11 feb 1663. He returned with his
family to the Hatfield allotment so as not to loose it for failure to settle there. Indian problems prevented many from moving to the new settlement. Was constable at Hadly in 1665; was Freeman 5/1666; d between date of will 11 sep 1675 and 15 sep 1675 date of his inventory valued at 292 pounds. variant spelling COLE, COAL, COALE, COLES, COWLE etc. per One Brance of the BOOTH Fam by C Booth; Hist of Hadley MA by S Judd; Gen of the COWLES Fam in AM by C Cowles; Gen & Fam Hist of State of CN by W Cutter.
John Cowles, born in England about 1598, came to Hartford 1635-39; Farmington, 1640; Hadley,
Massachusetts, 1659; Hatfield, 1660, where he died 1675; member of General Court of Connecticut;
townsman, and one of the "seven pillars" of the church in Farmington. He married Hanna -- -- --, who
died at Hartford 1683. Their wills are on file at Northampton and Hartford. Had seven children.
John married Hannah in 1632 in England. Hannah was born about 1613 in pos,Gloucester,England. She died on 16 Mar 1683 in Hartford,Hartford,Ct.
