Calvin Cowles put together a two-volume history of the Cowles family in the late 1920s. Each member of the Cowles family, including my father, is given a number, and it is extremely easy to make a Cowles family tree, working backwards. I have Calvin Cowles's two volume history, and had it printed at my own expense, which really didn't cost all that much. The original edition is in the downtown Los Angeles library, but only as a reference source. Probably most genealogical libraries will have Calvin Cowles's genealogical volumes.
