You are right about the spelling! The spelling of Cowles, at least in this line, was settled by the mid 19th century. Ithamar's father, Adna Cowles, seems to have spelled it [or others spelled it for him] several ways--Coles and Cole in particular.

BTW, my father referred to him as "Uncle Ip" [s]; too hard for a kid to pronounce, I guess.
