Surname Project
This is a reminder to all males with the Cowin surname. Also any females who have contact with a male Cowin relative to join our project, as we need you.
I am a Cowings with roots in the NE of England! I am in communication with a few people who feel there is a very strong chance Cowen,Cowan,Cowans, Cowins and Cowings are of the same ancestry.
A strong geographical link is Ryton, Co. Durham, England. Also the Isle of Man appears to be a Cowin 'hotspot' My DNA has strong connections with Cowan from Scotland and Northern Ireland too. One legend is that some Cowen came from Lindisfarne in Northumberland.
I was speaking to a former language teacher and a Geordie from Co. Durham England.
"The name changes to Cowan, Cowin and Cowins constantly. We can't be sure what the original name was!
Geordies pronounce the name as Cow'n, giving stress to the first vowel, the second vowel all but disappears. To confuse thing even further, a family of Cowen members would be known as the Cow'ns. A family of Cowin or Cowings, members would be known as the Cow'ns.
The only possible solution to this mystery is to come and join the project.
