Thanks, Laura, I will check out the Cowan listing you mentioned. I read in a surname book dealing with the British Isles that there were various spellings of Cowin, Cowen, Cowen, Cowyn copied from headstones where the names had almost completely faded away. The copying was said to have been done by a priest in the 13th century. Since these are anglicized spellings someone else must have translated them into English.
