I have been reseaching Elizabeth (Betty) COWHERD and Issac GRAVES' family for several years now. I have made 3 trips to VA for documentation of this marriage. I have found the following:
#1 Will of Jonathan COWHERD, probated Feb. 1806, Elizabeth is not mentioned nor are her 11 heirs, born 1773 - 1789. I understand Elizabeth died in 1790.
#2 Will of Sarah COWHERD, probated 1817, this will leaves Sarah's estate to her two daughters Tabitha and Frances and her son Yelverton, no mention of Elizabeth or her heirs.
If the above two persons are Elizabeth's parents why is she the only one left out, including her heirs?
#3 A Family Records of Births and Deaths of Issac GRAVES' family from the family file of The GRAVES family at the Orange County, VA Historical Society, in this list Betty COWHERD is listed as Issac's 2nd wife, it gives their childrens' names and dates of births and the date Bettty COWHERD GRAVES died. It does not list who her parents were.
#4 An article from the Orange County, VA Historical Society from THE ORANGE REVIEW, Thursday November 16,1954 entiled "Genealogy Of The COWHERD Family". It is a detailed genealogy of this family including the family name history, coat of arms, etc. In this article the children of Jonathan COWHERD and Sarah KIRTLEY are discussed and again Elizabeth is left out.
I have copies of Ms. Newton's book, but again no mention of documentation of this marriage, just a statement she is the 2nd wife of Issac Graves.
Could anyone please provide a reference as to where documentation can be found that proves that Elizabeth COWHERD GRAVES is the daughter of Jonathan COWHERD and Sarah KIRTLEY.
