Hi, Raymond! Melinda and I are related.

Melinda, the Grimes name appears elsewhere in the Cowey history. The 1777 C.W. Cowey had a son C.W. by his 1st wife (name unknown), and this son had a C.W. b. in 1835, about 7 months after he died. When the 1777 C.W. had a son in 1836 by his 3rd wife, that boy was named C.W. to replace the deceased son. This 1836 C.W. is my g-grandfather and these 2 C.W.'s caused us much confusion until the 1777 C.W.'s will was discovered.

This 1835 grandson to the 1777 C.W. was known then and now as C.W.J. - the J. standing for Jr., probably to distinguish him from his 1836 uncle with the same name. This C.W.J. married Mary Ann Grimes, and our cousin Daisy Cowey Wilt is his direct descendant. I believe you've contacted her, right?

I have a letter from the 1835 C.W. in Martin Co, NC to my C.W. in TX - written Jan 21, 1886. The letter has family Bible info, which helped us solve part of the sibling mystery.

**Raymond, I would like to know more about the John Cowey incident. Any idea where you obtained the info? I have seen JOHN COWEY listed as captain of a ship in the 1800's, and I wonder if the drowning occurred when he was a captain. Also, there's a family legend about a "sea captain" that ran off to Australia and never came back - Daisy has the note he left! There was also a John Cowey named as trustee on some wills - not for Cowey's though - so maybe he was an attorney. There are also Cowey's listed in a book on "Loyalists in the Carolinas" - don't know exact title. Raymond, when my brother John (your co-worker) was a young history teacher & Revolutionary War buff, he was very disappointed that a Cowey was a Loyalist! Of course, that opinion has changed and he's very proud of his British heritage. Just wish we could make the connection across the Atlantic with your Coweys!**
