Cowey /Martin CO.,N.C.

I saw on the Edgecombe CO.,N.C. vital records, 1720-1880, a listing of Charles Covey, occupation given as soldier, attained rank of captain: married in Martin CO.,N.C., death date given as after 1831. Had for children, Mary, and others.
I wonder if the Cowey name was also "known" as Covey.
Charles Covey had a daughter named Mary Eliza who married a Thomas Grimes in Edgecombe CO.,N.C. Mary Eliza's birth location was given as Martin CO.,N.C. and her father was listed as Charles Covey.
I have checked the 1810 Martin CO.,N.C. census and there are Coreys(another version?) and Charles Cowey but no Coveys. In fact, no Coveys show up until 1850 with a Lucy Covey, Martin CO.,N.C., 1850.
