Nancy: Thanks for the information you gave me. I don't have the name of Samuel's father. His wife's name, according to James Cowen, when he was filing for membership in the Choctaw Nation, is Rachel Talbert. He said she was a Choctaw. His membership was denied because he had no proof. I researched a David Cowan in Maries County, MO. According to a book in the library on early settlers, there was a George Martin who was married on Jan 17, 1836, to Mary Ann (Polly) Cowan, and they had 3 children: Joseph, Thomas and David. David had a son, James, who I thought might be our James (the age was right), but after much research, it turned out that this James died when he was 21. I knew positively that our James Cowen lived until 1928. I wonder if this could be the David who you mentioned. Spelling doesn't seem to matter. He could be related. Maries Co. is close to Gasconade Co. I wish James had given his grandfather's name, but probably he just didn't know it. James said both his parents died when he was a little boy so this is probably why his information is so sketchy. I'll try to find information on Adam Cowen and will let you know if I find anything. Do you think there's any info in NC on this? Please let me know if you find any more too. Charlene Notify Administrator about this message?
