Charlene

I just came across your inquiry posted on Aug 10th 2009 about James Cowen of Osage, MO. Ironically, on Aug 11th 2009 I posted a response to a fairly old message on the Ancestry.com Cowen surname board in regard to Samuel Cowen m. Polly Miller.

I will repeat what I wrote in that message:

"I have been researching the Cowen family in Missouri. I believe that our missing Cowan family from Buncombe, NC went to Gasconade Co shortly after 1830. In doing this research, I came across a Samuel Cowen who was involved in the estate settlemenet of an Adam Cowen who died in 1836. Wanting to know how this person fit into the family I started searching for him and found that a Samuel Cowen and a Polly Miller were married on July 15, 1838 in Gasconade So. Samuel's name on the marriage records was spelled Cowain. Cowen family researchers told me that Samuel and Polly's son James "Cowin" was listed on the 1850 and 1860 Census for Osage, MO, living in the household of Polly's brother Isaac Miller. I couldn't find out any details on what happened to the parents of James"

I sent for the Adam Cowen estate papers in Feb of 2008. The Missouri State Archives researched the the pages and found that Adam Cowen died intestate and David Cowen(his son) was appointed his administrator. The probate case was listed under Adam Cowain and showed Samuel Cowen and Jacob Williams as the appraisers. David Cowen came back to court and the settlement was carried over to the next term of court. A check of the next days of court did not bring any mention of David Cowen coming back.

Bottom line we do not know at this time if Samuel was also a son of Adam Cowen, but he was somehow involved with this family. Variations of the surname spelling are numerous.

Check on genealogy.com forum for Cowin. There is a subject Samuel Cowain m. Polly Miller, MO. Post date is April 05, 2001. It lists the parents and siblings of Polly.

One of our male Buncombe County Cowans has just submitted DNA for testing through Ancestry.com. Last year a member of the Missouri Cowens did the same. We are hoping for a match.
