Hello, this is in response to a message from Keith D. Ashley on my g-g grandfather Dr. Obadiah "Diah" Beckwith Cowdery who was born in 1816. He married on April 24, 1848 in Meigs Co. Ohio to Marthina "Martha" (not Mary) Christy. She was born on Dec 31, 1824 in Wilkerville Ohio to William Christy and Hannah D. Douglas Christy. (Martha died on June 16, 18670. Diah was early in farming, pro. in Salem Twp. Meigs Co., then was a postmaster of Hamden, Ohio and during the Civil War was a wagon-master and ran pack-trains to Federal Troops from Ohio to Tennessee. Diah also had a Millinery,Notions and Ladies Furnishing Goods Store, called the "Bazaar" which he was partner in business with a Mr. Strong. Diah also had a dry goods store called the "Coffin and Clark in Union City, Ind. When Martha died Diah and his new wife Esther Marie Mores-Burt sold the store and went into Dentistry in 1852 in Salam, Ohio, Meigs County, Ohio.My g-great grandfather, Dr. Obadiah Beckwith Cowdery was said to have been the earliest user of the then newly-discovered anaesthetic, "Ethyl Ether",in Southwestern Ohio in his practice. He had a Dental Office at #43 Columbia St. in Union City, Indiana, according to an ancient paper form.
