Hi, Brenda. Thanks for your reply. Is this Elam Church the one in Bryan Co., near Egypt? I live in NC but we plan to be in Bulloch Co. (Denmark area) during this Thanksgiving and I would like to look in this cemetery and also for any church records in the Statesboro library. The family story is that this Zack (Zach) Cowart was a soldier drifting thru Bulloch Co. looking for work after the War. (One story has him as a Yankee soldier.) His daughter with Maggie BANKS, Mittie Eugenia who was my grandmother, was born 16 July 1873. The 1860 census shows Maggie living with her parents at Mayo Station in Bryan Co. (Her father, Simeon Callaway BANKS died in NC in 1864.)The 1870 census shows Maggie (Margaret), age 20, living with her mother, Maratha, at Ways Station in Bryan County. By 1880, the family is located in Bulloch Co. in the Hagins District. The 1880 census shows Mittie BANKS, age 7, living with her grandmother, Martha, in Bulloch Co., Dist. 48. As the story goes, a relative of Maggie's, possibly a brother or uncle, took the child away (to another county? state?) until Zack Cowart moved on "back to Carolina". Apparently there was a fear that he would take the child. Anyway, I have often wondered about the family stories. Why was Zack Cowart in that particular area? Was he really just "drifting through"? It does seem likely, since there were many Cowarts in that area, that he was visiting relatives or possibly lived somewhere in the region. The re-occurring name of Zack/Zach would seem to be more than coincidence. It certainly would not be uncommon for facts to be "skewed" in the family's passed-down story version if Maggie's (or Zack's) marital status was questionable or if there were strong family opposition to the match. Any info you happen to come across that may be related would be appreciated. Thanks for your help.
