My great grandparents were Ephrem (sp) Alexander Coward (t) and Mary Ellen Parker. He was from Alabama & Missisippi, we believe then came to Texas. We believe his mother was Choctaw, Cherokee or Creek. His mother and 2 siblings were drowned, we have been told through the ages, in the Banderas River. He and Mary Ellen moved to south Texas, Pawnee then Kenedy where they farmed cotton on land supposedly purchased by one of their daughters, my grandmother, Nora Coward/Robinette/Clements/Smith with money from a cotton gin accident in/around Cisco that killed her first husband. WE actually do have a bunch of family information, both oral and in writing, and pictures, but the mystery outweighs the facts, still.
