I must say it is nice to "meet" someone in the Coward family. I come from Luke and Mary Coward Pettey's second son Lewis. Lewis died about the same time as William Coward. Possibly of Yellow Feaver. I live in New Orleans but my family has lived in Texas for 3 generations. I can trace the Cowards back to Kershaw County South Carolina. I belive William's father was Benjamin Coward born about 1760. His wife may or may not have been Millie. Benjamin's father was named Benjamin born 1737 and his wife was Elizabeth Allday. The elder Benjamin and My ancestors Luke and Elizabeth Hood Petty were neighbors back in Kershaw (Craven)County, South Carolina. According to the 1800 SC census Benjamin is the only Coward in Kershaw County to have a boy and a girl in the household that will accomidate the known birth dates of Mary and William. There is a book "The Coward/Cowart Chronicles" that traces the Cowards back to England.
