James T. Newell re message 505.
My proof was accepted by DAR for me as Supplementals for Needham COWARD and his father,Edward COWARD,Sr. The SAR in northern CA accepted my proof and my father became a member of the Redwood Empire Chapter of Sons of the American Revolution. His National number is 116901 and his Redwood Empire Chapter number is 4710.Line 4 -MILITARY SERVICE:{Pvt NEEDHAM COWARD is #29 on the Muster Roll of Dobbs Co NC Militia February 1771, Commanded by Captain John CHARLCRAFT.SOURCE: Section IV, Military Records, OLD DOBBS COUNTY RECORDS, Attested: Simon BLAKE.This information is also listed on page 872, COLONIAL SOLDIERS OF THE SOUTH, 1732-1774, by Murtie June Clark.Needham COWARD'S Patriot Service is recorded in a manuscript volume in the custody of the North Carolina State Archives titled, REVOLUTIONARY ARMY ACCOUNTS (Volume IX, Page 10, Folio 4.)HEADING:An account of Certificates deliverd into the TreasurersOffice and exchanged Pursuant to Act of Assembly passed December 1789.
To whom Originally Issued: NEEDHAM COWARD
Amount of Principal:1 pound, 2 shillings
(Needham either gave goods or services.)I did not copy the whole Certificates here for Needham or Edward COWARD,Sr.as a copy can be sent for. There is also a certificate for Edward COWARD,Jrbrother of Needham COWARD.If anyone wants to send for my DAR papers re Edward COWARD, Sr and Needham COWARD my DAR National # is598647.You have to go through a member to obtain a copy from the DAR.
Line 3. For Edward COWARD,Sr - SOURCE: from the same above RW ACCOUNTS in the NC STATE ARCHIVES.
Persons name in whom issued:EDWARD COWARDVol VI, P 26, Folio 3.
As to ages or birthdates i.e., Needham COWARD.In the 1769 Dobbs Co NC Tax List Needham is noted with his father Edward, Sr.Needham had to have been at least 18 to be on the Tax List.I notice I put 1753 I should have put 1751. By 26 Jan 1778 Needham has married and is a father to Isaac Hardee COWARD,as he and Phebe COWARD are named as the parents of Isaac Hardee COWARD in a Deed of Gift written by Jacob BLOUNT, of Hencoop in Pitt Co NC.Isaac Hardy COWARD was born 10 Sept 1776 so he was just over one years old when he was left a slave as a gift by Jacob BLOUNT.Through family history and the census records we know that Needham M. COWARD was b 1790 in Dobbs Co NC.Ida Rebecca COWARD, a great family historian, was my source for Phebe having died at the birth of Needham M. COWARD. Ida Rebecca COWARD b 11 June 1891 Franklin Co MS d 17 Mar 1987 Meadville MS.Edward COWARD,Sr was b abt 1726.His father, John COWARD, d 1737 leaving 3 sons and one son abt to be born.Edward was the 3rd son listed in John's will he was probably b abt 1726 Bertie Co NC if John and Elizabeth (GRIFFEN?) were m abt 1723.E-mail me and we can discuss this further.
James, I found a Zachariah COWARD b 1787 (Dobbs Co?) NC d Jan 1860 Marion Co MS ( this d date on the 1860 Mortality Schedule.)I also found him in the 1850 Census of Marion Co MS with spouse S. COWARD b 1797 GA and children, J.W. COWARD b 1833, and A. COWARD b 1836 MS. Is this your Zachariah?Oh, how I wish the full names had been used! Since other children of Needham COWARD moved to Marion Co MS and nearby, it seemed possible that he was Needham & Phebe's son.
