I have found some new information and some corrections about this family. William Cowan was born in 1766 in County Antrim, Ireland and was married to Elizabeth Baxter. There is a Petition of Naturalization in Union County, SC for this family listing William and Elizabeth with 8 children: William Jr., John, Elizabeth, Mary, Jennett, James, Jane and Margaret. This is dated 3/11/1828 and states that they had lived here for about 8 yrs. John Coan did marry a Sherbert and had 3 children before she died. This was indicated in the 1850 Census but I found his daughter, Cansada Coan's death certificate which also lists her mother as "Sherbert" (no first name). John remarried to Mary Brooks and I finally found them in the 1860 Census. They were living in "Bivingsville" which is now called Glendale based on the Glendale cotton mill and mill village built by a Mr. Bivings. 1860 U.S. Census of Bivingsville, Northern Division of Spartanburg, Spartanburg County, SC, Series M653, Roll 1226, HeritageQuest.com, Stamped pg 215, handwritten pg 39, Lines 20-24, Dwelling 261, Family 261, "John Cowen" (Note: On same pg as Samuel Shurbott, Lines 1-7) John Cowen (sic), 40 yrs old, M(ale), W(hite), Farmer, $0 real estate value, $50 personal estate value, Born in SC Mary Cowen, 43 yrs old, F, W, Born in Sc Isabella Cowen, 18 (or 19) yrs old, F, W, Born in SC ? Yaddie Cowen, 13 yrs old, M, W, Born in SC ? Nancy Cowen, 11 yrs old, F, W, Born in SC (John and ? Sherbert Coan's daughter. Where was Cansada at this time?) I have found Cansada Coan's death certificate: County of Spartanburg, Township of Spartanburg, Certificate # 16535, Home Address is Whitney, SC, Registration District 4008, Registered # 108, Miss Canzada Coan (Ancestry.com has it indexed as Cauzoda Coan) Female, White, Single, DOB 1/16/1849, 91 yrs old Domestic Born in Spartanburg County, SC Father: John Coan, born in Ireland Mother: Sherbert (no first name given), born in SC Informant Rev. A.P. Jones of Whitney, SC Buried in Whitney Cemetery, 9/8/1940 DOD 9/7/1940 Physician attended from 9/1/1940 to 9/7/1940, last saw deceased alive on 9/6/1940 Cause of death Aortic Regurgitation, date of onset 6/1/1940 Contributory causes were Urenuu No autopsy Physician W.H. Chapman of Whitney, SC (Whitney was also a cotton mill and mill village in Spartanburg.) I have not found Nancy Coan's death certificate or where she is buried yet. She was still alive and living with her father, stepmother and Cansada in the 1880 Census. I also haven't found any obituary or other notice of John and Mary's death yet. I have my dates from their tombstones. It seems that William Cowan is NOT the same William Cowan with Mary Otts and the Otts family is not related to our Cowans. I thank David T. Bunton for his help and communication. If anyone else has any info to add, I would love to know about it. Notify Administrator about this message?
