Hello, I am searching for a connection from my Henry Cohen/Cowan/Cowen to David VARNER Cowen/Cowan. David was married to Susan B. Johns after her first husband/cousin, Abner Johns died. I am surprised at all the Cowen names with Varner in them. Here are a few hints that make me think there might be a connection to my line: By the way, thank you to all who posted these pieces online. Excerpt from http://www.tngenweb.org/rutherford/johns2.htm Submitted by Estelle Hall, June 2003 18 Aug 1829- To the undersigned commissioned appointed by the County Court of Rutherford, May term 1809. To settle with JOSEPH B. JOHNS, executor of Abner Johns, decd ==== Excerpt from http://newsarch.rootsweb.com/th/read/JOHNS/2001-06/0993446740 LAST WILL AND TESTAMENT OF ABNER JOHNS: In the name of God, amen. I, ABNER JOHNS of the county of Rutherford and state of Tennessee being in a low state of health, but of sound mind and memory, blessed by God, do this 10th day of June in the year of our Lord, One Thousand Eight Hundred and Twenty Five, make and publish this my last Will and Testament in the manner and form following, that is to say, first item, I give and bequeath unto my beloved wife Susan Johns five Negroes, Sam, Hannah, Joe, Isabel and Lucy, them and their future increase, to her and her heirs forever. ====== http://www.tngenweb.org/rutherford/johns2.htm This from Bob Newsome, Johns Family History Assoc. William Johns, Jr. and Hannah Glover had 3 sons: Edmund Glover Johns, Abner Johns and John Johns....of course these are the Johns brothers who also settled in Rutherford Co. and for whom you so wonderfully supplied me with records. Abner, as you know, married Susan Johns, daughter of his first cousin Joseph B. Johns. Therefore, Abner and Susan not only shared the Johns connection, but also the Glover connection. Amazing, isn't it. Back to Susan's Glover Johns. In or about 1832, Glover moved from Buckingham Co., with all four of his children, to RUTHERFORD CO., TN. Glover's wife had recently died and two sons were young men...he also had a young daughter and John Jay Johns who was the youngest child and about 14 years old. Glover's daughter Mary Elizabeth married William Cowan in Rutherford about 1833-1834. I feel certain William Cowan must have been related to Varner Cowan, 2nd husband of Susan Johns. Glover Johns and his family only stayed in middle TN for several years and moved on to Mississippi. Mary Elizabeth and Wm. Cowan moved to Memphis. ==== http://files.usgwarchives.net/tn/rutherford/vitals/marriages/rutcotn.txt RUTHERFORD COUNTY, TENNESSEE MARRIAGES COWAN, Varner D marr. JETTON, Margaret on 07-JUN-1824 (first wife) COWAN, Varner D marr. JOHNS, Susan B on 28-JUN-1827 (second wife) ==== My note: So it's clear that Abner Johns was married to Susan Johns (his cousin) and died before her. Then Susan married Varner D. Cowan after Abner died. Varner and Susan had children of their own. See census record below for details. I can't recall where I found him listed as David. However, continue reading and take a look at the names of my Henry Cohen's family in the 1880 census. ==== http://www.tngenweb.org/rutherford/johns2.htm Submitted by Estelle Hall, June 2003 20 Jan 1845- William Johns, Thomas Johns, Randel V. My aunt found copies of some confederate records for Camp Douglas, ILL register No. 1 Page 342 that lists a Henry H. Cowan, Pvt. Co. C 45th Regiment of the Tennessee Infantry that lists him as a Prisoner of War at Camp Douglas. It says he was captured in Atlanta, GA on Sept. 4, 1864 and was released 24 Mar. 1865. There is another Roll of Prisoner of War records that is very hard to read. From what I can distinguish, it appears to say that he deserted to avail himself of the amnesty proclamation. This one is not dated. But is for someone named Henry H. Cowan and the rank, company and regiment is all the same as the above mentioned one. Could it be that he was captured and deserted, causing a fallout with the family, forcing him to move and change his name??? We are told Henry is buried in an unmarked grave on Lookout Mt. We would love to hear your theory on these items or any information you would like to add or have us consider. Thanks for your time. Dayna Cohen McMullen Notify Administrator about this message?
