A biography of George W. Cowan is included in "Montana, Its Story and Biography", Vol 3, pages 885 & 886. George was born, 27 Aug 1868, Fulton, NY, son of William and Mary (Watters), both natives of North Ireland. They were farmers and conducted a boarding house for tourists in the Catskill Mountains. Mary Cowan died in the Catskills in 1897 and two years after William sold his interests and came to Montana to be with his sons. He died at Harlem, MT, in 1903, age 78. Children of William and Mary Cowan: Winfield S. (Harlem, MT); Jennie (Mrs. Jennie Whitbeck, Columbus, OH); Elizabeth (Mrs. George Banta, Brooklyn, NY); James Arthur (Harlem, MT); Eugene Everett (d. 1898, Nantucket, CT); George William; Charles Alexander (Schoharrie Co., NY); Minne (ranchman north of Harlem, MT). In 1889, George William Cowan came to Fergus County, Montana, where his first employment was as a sheepherder. In 1891-92, he worked for ranchman David Hilger. Then George and his brother, Winfield, located on Woody Creek Island on the Canadian border and went into the sheep business. After 2-1/2 years, George sold his interest to his brother and he returned to New York and for 2-1/2 years ran a stage and mail line and some farming. In 1899, he became a resident of Harlem, MT, and formed a partnership with W.E. Franch in farming, stock raising and livery business. After about two years, the partnership was dissolved and George kept the livery business. After 19 months he sold the livery and went into the sheep business until the fall of 1912. He and his wife spent the winter of 1910 in California. Leaving the ranch, he moved to Chinook and went into the livery and feed business. He entered on a homestead on the Bear Paw Mountains, on Snake Creek, 16 miles south of Chinook. On 13 Apr 1899, George married Miss Edith Fancher, born Sept 1880, Summit, NY, sixth of the seven children of Seth Fancher. Cowan children: Florence Louisa, George Perry, Arthur Edward.
