A biography and portrait of Winfield S. Cowan, Harlem, MT, merchant, are included in "Montana, Its Story and Biography", Vol 3, page 896.
Winfield was born, 29 May 1856, son of William Cowan. Winfield was raise on a farm and at age 13 began working as a farmhand in NY, working in the summer and going to school in the winter. In Mar 1882, he came by train to Miles City, MT, then to Fort McGinnis where his first work was on a ranch for James Fergus, for whom Fergus county was named. After four years, Winfield left that work and bought a band of sheep and established a business of his own in partnership with J.D. Grant. Four years later the partnership was dissolved and Mr. Cowan came to Milk River country and began sheep ranching on Woody Island, a few miles south of the Canadian border. He entered a homestead there and continued in business with his brothers, Arthur and George W., for five or six years until the partnership was dissolved. Winfield continued the business until settlers moved in and he sold his stock and moved to Harlem, MT, where he started a mercantile business. He formed a partnership with Robert Corbett in the Harlem Saddlery. He became vice president of the First National Bank of Harlem. Served as councilman and then mayor of Harlem.
On 18 Oct 1893, Malta, MT, Winfield married Miss Margaret E. Payne, born 1866, Shoharie County, NY, daughter of John and Eliza (Cropser) Payne. Cowan children: Harold E.; Winfield S., Jr.; Grace Shirley.
