I'm trying to find information on the parents and grandparents of our Jeremiah Cowan, b. 1830 in NY. Family tradition has it that 2-year-old Jeremiah was on train with his father (James, husband of Ellen?) when his father died of cholera. He was brought up by foster families, and because of childish speech he used the name Cowins. He married Catherine Campbell Hodge, and became a minister. Family history is somewhat sketchy prior to Jeremiah. Does this ring a bell with anyone???
