I've been researching my husband's family connection to the Coans. His paternal grandmother was Mabel Louise Cohen, daughter of William Edward "Will" Cohen of Union, SC. Will was the son of Zadoc Coan and Susan Ann Quinn, who were in Spartanburg, SC. This surname is spelled so many different ways: Coan, Cowan, Cohen, Coin, Kohen, Coyn, Cowhan, etc, etc.
Zadoc Coan (aka Zadok, Zade, misspelled as Zadop and Zadoe) was born about 1847 in SC and died 12/15/1884 in Spartanburg, SC. He is buried at Zion Hill Baptist Church cemetery, 2817 E. Main St (Hwy 29), Spartanburg, SC, 29307 with his wife, Susan Ann Quinn Coan. Their tombstone is in very good shape.
Obituary in Carolina Spartan dated 12/17/1884, "Zadoc Coan, a good, quiet citizen was working in an old stable on Mr. John Archer's farm near town Monday, when the house tumbled down and crushed him to death. He was buried Tuesday."
Susan Ann Quinn (aka Susanah) was born May, 1848 in SC and died 1939 in Spartanburg, SC. She was the daughter of James W. Quinn (DOB 9/24/1824 in SC and died after 1902 in Spartanburg, SC) and Agness M. Quinn (DOB 8/16/1820 in SC and DOD 7/23/1902 in Spartanburg, SC). J.W. and Agness M. Quinn are also buried at Zion Hill Baptist Church.

Maybe John Cowan was married to Zadok Sherbert's daughter and when she died (probably in childbirth because the baby is only 3 months old) he left the children with her father and sister-in-law and her children while he worked nearby. William Cowan may be John's father or grandfather.

Israel Fowler died 5/28/1918 and Susan Ann Quinn Coan Fowler moved in with her married daughter, Talulah Cohen Hodge. Now back to Zade Coan. His father was John Coan who was born in 1816 in Ireland (according to the 1850 Census). He died 3/13/1893 in Spartanburg, SC. He is buried next to his 2nd wife, Mary Brooks at Zion Hill Baptist Church, 2817 E. Main St (Hwy 29), Spartanburg, SC, 29307. His stone is in very good shape considering it's age. It is still readable.
Mary Brooks was born 1/15/1819 in Anson County, NC to Jesse Bradford Brooks and Anne Phillips. Mary died 1/22/1901 in Spartanburg, SC. Her stone is in very good shape considering it's age. It is readable.
John Coan had 3 children by his 1st marriage (no children by his 2nd marriage):

Zadoc Coan and Susan Ann Quinn had 6 children that I'm aware of:
1) William Edward Cohen "Will" (DOB 3/27/1884, DOD 2/24/1984) married Kathryn Kelly "Kate". This is my husband's great grandfather.
2) Talula Cohen (DOB About 1871, DOD 8/9/1956) married William Hodge
3) John Cohen (DOB 3/12/1877, DOD 9/19/1964) married Ella Reid
4) Mary E. Coan (DOB About 1872, DOD ? ) married ?
5) Nancy J. Coan (DOB About 1877, DOD ? ) married ?
6) Susana Coan (DOB 1/1879, DOD 6/15/1892) Not married. Buried beside her father at Zion Hill Baptist Church. Stone is greatly deteriorated and can barely read it. Her name is spelled as "Suziana Coan"
If anyone knows anything else about this family, I would appreciate it very much. Please contact me. I'm especially interested to know more about John Coan and his first wife, their parents, etc. Surely they are tied in to the Coans in Spartanburg who are well known and buried at Nazareth Presbyterian Church.
