A biography/family history of Arthur J. Cowan, Harlem, MT, is included in "Montana, Its Story and Biography", Vol 3, pages 940 & 941.

Arthur was born, 19 Jan 1864, near Jefferson, NY, son of William and Mary (Brooks) Cowan. At age 13 he began working as a farm hand and in 1893 came to Montana where for a number of years he and his brother were sheep ranchers on Wood Island Creek. He and his brothers, George W. and Winfield S., for four years ran 4,000-5,000 sheep. Arthur disposed of his sheep in 1917. In 1903, Arthur moved to Harlem, MT, where he and a brother had a butchering business. Arthur was also on the board of directors of the First National Bank. Mrs. Cowan taught in the first school in Malta, MT, and the Cowans maintained a home in Malta for several years.

On 24 Dec 1891, Schoharie County, NY, Arthur married Mrs. Mary (Payne) Brockway, daughter of John Payne and sister of Mrs. Winfield S. Cowan of Harlem, MT. Mrs. Cowan's children by her first marriage: Mabel (Mrs. Verd Johnson, Woody Island Creek, MT), Sidney (Harlem, MT), Fred (Woody Island Creek, MT).
