I'm looking for more information about family of my g-g-great grandfather, Thomas Cowan.
One source says he was born in 1797, another says 1811. I don't know when he died.
The following is from a Fort Scott, Kansas newspaper article written in 1969.
"Thomas Cowan, as a youth lived in northern Ireland and he joined a movement for home rule. England put down the rebellion by flogging, torturing and executing. Thomas was smuggled out on a stock boat bound for North America where there is reason to believe he had relatives in North Carolina. He was hidden in a hogshead with holes bored in it for ventilation until safely out to sea.
Arriving in the United States, Thomas started migrating westward, working for a time at each destination. Somewhere along the way he met and married a young Scotch lass quite a bit younger than he named Jerusha Sprague. The couple raised six children, four boys and two girls. The family lived in Decatur, Ill., then moved to Arkansas. Thomas was in his 70s when in 1858 the made the last move by wagon to eastern Kansas, then the western frontier. They built a log cabin a few miles southwest of what is now Uniontown. At their death both Thomas and Jerusha were buried on a hill in a now abandoned cemetery just east of Uniontown."
I descend from Thomas' son Edwin Henry Harrison Cowan b. 23 Jul 1839, d. 28 Aug 1916.
Please reply if you can help.
