I collect information on all Coveys in the US. Gilbert Bates is a son-in-law of Samuel Covey. I don't know what this court case is about but it is very interesting and I'm going to try to follow up. Samuel Covey was born about 1761 in NY and married Elizabeth Knapp. They lived in Montgomery Co., VA. Joseph is their son.
