For Michiganders and family of Benjamin and Almira Mack
Being from Michigan, this historical error hit me between the eyes. Quist says Almira's father founded Detroit. I knew he had NOT, but did not know he was the founder of the City of Pontiac, from which came Temperance. Learn something new everyday.
"17th century French explorer Antoine Laumet de La Mothe, sieur de Cadillac, was the FOUNDER OF DETROIT, Michigan in 1701."
100+ years later:
"Stephen, Mack Sr., born in Massachusetts, leftTunbridge, Vermont, in 1807, to become the first English-speaking merchant in Detroit. He entered into a partnership known as Mack & Conant until 1821 when it was purchased by its chief competitor -The American Fur Company. In 1812 he became a trustee of the village of Detroit and later foundedthe city of Pontiac, Michigan and became a director of the Bank of Michigan."
As to his Military Designation:
Quist says he was a Captain. A letter from his sister, Lucy, says he was a Major. Mormon history calls him a Colonel. His military records say he was a Private. With his brother Jason, Stephen enlistedJuly 25, 1779 through August 31, 1779, for 1 mo 12 days. The enlistment mentioned by Lucy was the second, for three years, from April 2, 1781 to 1783.
"In 1832, Stephen Jr. of Chicago, Illinois joined Capt. John S.C. Hogan’s Company, for less than one month. (Not long enough to become a Captain). On July 25, 1835, he founded Pecatonic, Illinois."
