Annie Couts, my Jewish grandmother, was born (where or when, I don't know) of a Polish family who at some point immigrated to England (probably after 1880). They probably changed their name to Couts at the time that they immigrated. Annie left school at an early age (12?) to work in the textile mills in Leeds. She married (where/when I don't know) a Gentile man called Sidney Jackson, and they lived and raised children (my dad Jay, born 1916, and his sister Marion, born 1910) in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada. My guess is that Sidney was a Canadian and Annie met and married him after her family went to Canada, but I don't know for sure. Annie's husband (my grandfather) Sidney died in 1920, and Annie moved her family to Toronto and took a job as a clerk in a dress shop. Marion married a New York businessman, moved to the US, and had 2 or more children. Several members of my grandmother's family also emigrated to Canada, sometime before 1920 or so (I don't know when, or the route, or any of their names). Sometime after 1920 Annie and at least some of her parents, aunts, and/or uncles may have moved to Chicago and opened a tailor shop. Annie lived with her daughter Marion for a time, married a second time (in Florida?), and died in about 1956. This is the sum total of everything I know about my grandmother. I would love to have any further information on her and her family. A photo would be a treasure beyond belief. At one time a Leah Cohen posted to genealogy.com looking for Jewish Couts ancestors who had changed their name from Yuchetil when they emigrated from Odessa to England. Unfortunately Leah's email address no longer works. Can anyone put me in touch with her? Any/all clues most welcome! many thanks, Martha Jackson Notify Administrator about this message?
