Sara Isabel Cousar a.k.a. "Sallie Belle," m. Robert Newman Plaxco in SC
I was wondering if anyone knows anything about the parents and ancestors of SARA ISABEL ("SALLIE BELLE") COUSAR, b. 31 Jul 1867 in SC, d. 21 Aug 1928 in York County, SC. I don't know where she was born, but it may have been York County. On 11 May 1887 she married ROBERT NEWMAN PLAXCO, son of WILLIAM SHELBY PLAXCO and MARGARET MARTHA GALLOWAY. Robert and Sallie are both buried, along with many of my ancestors and relatives, in the Bethany ARP Churchyard Cemetery in York County, SC, but there aren't any other Cousars buried there.
Robert Plaxco's brother, JOHN BOYCE PLAXCO, married an EMMA BERTHA COUSAR (b. 1870, d. 1908), who could very well be Sallie's sister or cousin.
Additionally, there is a MARGARET EULA COUSAR (b. 22 Jun 1874, d. 17 Sep 1949,) who married JAMES CLARK ROBINSON. She lived in Lancaster County, SC. I suspect she might be related, as the name Eula keeps coming up in my family--Sallie's daughter and my great-grandmother is named Mary Eula Plaxco. Perhaps Sallie has an ancestor named Eula?
On FamilySearch. org, I found some 1880 South Carolina census records of interest.
The first lists N. R. COUSAR, b. 1830, as the head of household, with his wife MARY COUSAR, b. 1840. They have a daughter named "Sarah Cousar" born in 1868, and another named "Margret Cousar" born in 1875. (Maybe the census takers weren't terribly concerned with accuracy as far as the dates go?) Other children were: Lillia, Corhine, John, Susan, and Mary. There's a good chance this is the family of NELSON RICHARD COUSAR and MARY BRADLEY. The census place is given as New Zion, Clarendon, SC.
The second lists RICHARD H. COUSART (b. 1918) as the head of household, with wife MARGARET M. COUSART (b. 1833). They have a daughter named "Sally E. Cousart" (the names Elizabeth and Isabel are often interchangeable--or, again, we could have a mistake on the census-taker's part), b. 1868. There is also a "Margaret N. Cousart" b. 1874, and an "Emma B. Cousart" b. 1871. Other siblings are William and Nathaniel B. This census was taken in Gills Creek, Lancaster, SC. Perhaps this is the family of Margaret Matilda Craig (of the Waxhaw Craigs, from whom I descend on another line), who married a Richard H. Cousar according to this site: http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Meadows/9791/team2_123.htmhttp://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Meadows/9791/team2_123.htm.
Please reply or e-mail me if any of these names rings a bell. The Cousars are currently a dead end in my family tree, and I want to fix that.
Your Ohioan cousin,
Julia
