Among the passengers of the ship De Bonte Kow (The Brindled Cow) that sailed to America 43 years after the Mayflower in 1663 were:
Jan Laurens Bogaert from Schonderwoert, and Wife and two children, 7 & 4 yrs.
Theunis Bastiaensen Cool, and child, 8 yrs. (I descend from the Cool’s)
Jan Bastiaensen, from Leerdam, and Wife and four children 19, 15, 12, & 6 yrs.
Giel Bastiaensen, from Leerdam, and Wife and four children 8, 9, 5 & 1 yr.
Geil and Chiel were the nicknames of Michael Bastiaensen Van Kortryck. Leerdam was in Gelderland, Holland. Michael was born in 1620 in Leerdam. His brother Jan Bastiaensen Van Kortryck was born in 1618 in Leerdam. Their father was Sebastian Van Kortryk born 1586 Kortryk. Sebastian’s father was Cortez according to the book printed in 1907 by John W. Lowe of Circleville, Ohio, titled “Early History of the Cortez/Van Kortryk/Van Kortright Family.
One of Jan’s son’s was Laurens Jansen Kortijk who changed his last name to Louw. He was born in 1672 Leerdam, Gelderland, Holland. There is no knowledge as to why he changed his name. This isn’t documented, however I did find this:Jan Bastiaensen Kortryjk was witness to power of attorney giving his old friend Jan Laurens (Louw) Bogert …..etc. They were neighbors before they came together on the same ship. I believe Jan named his son Laurens after his friend, Jan Laurens Bogert’s. His father was Louw Theuniszen Bogaert. Louw’s parents were Theuniszen Gisberszen in Den Boogaertman and Neeltjen Laurens. Louw’s brother was Gijsbert Theuniszen Bogaert and Gijsbert’s son was Tunis Gysbert Bogaert, the second husband of Sarah Rapalje, my ancestor.
Jan and Tunis were cousins.
Laurens Jansen Kortijk who changed his last name to Louw married Mary Roosa, who was also born in Gelderland, Holland and their daughter Annatje Jansen Low married Gysbert Bogert, the son ofLouw Theuniszn Bogaert. It is my theory, that the this is why Laurens children changed their name to Louw. Mary Roosa’s parents were Aldert Heymans Roosa and Wyntje De Jongh. Mary Roosa’s brother Heyman Alderste Roosa married Anna Margaret Rosenvelt, Claes van Rosenvelt’s daughter.
Annetje Bogert married Jacobus Roosevelt, Eleanor Roosevelt’s 3rd great grandparents, and Theodore Roosevelt’s 2nd great grandparents. FDR, Theodore and Eleanor all descend from Claes Martenszen van Rosenvelt and Jannetje Samuel-Thomas. Annetje‘s great grandfather was Jan Laurens (Louw) Bogaert.
Gysbert and Louw Bogaert’s sister Neeltjien Gijsbertse Bogaert married Gijsbert Theuniszen Middagh son of Theuniszen Guysbert Middagh. I descend from Aert Theuniszen Middagh, Gysbert’s brother. Aert married Breckje Hansen Bergen daughter of Hans Hansen Bergen and Sarah Rapalje. I descend from Breckje.
Neeltjen’s parents were Gijsbert Theuniszn Bogaert and Aertjen Bastiaens.
Aertjen’s father was Pieter Coeyman. Gijsbert’s parents were Theunis Gisberszen In Den Boogaertman and Neeltjien Laurens.
Cornelis Kortright's great-great granddaughter Elisabeth Kortright was married to James Monroe, then Ambassador to Paris, France, and later the president of the United States. Her father was Lawrence Kortright, a merchant in New York and her mother was Hannah Aspinwall. Elizabeth Monroe's paternal ancestry line is from Bastian Van Kortryk.
