Posted for H.C. Shelton, 85 yr. old grandson of J.L. Courtney, by Lois Ross (grandaughter).
On the basis of EVERYTHING posted by David Hedgpeth, I cannot agree with ANYTHING he says. He failed to reply to the one and only GenForum reply I have sent in, stating that on pg. 2 of Duke's book she states that in 1847 Jesse Woodson James was born to Robert Sallee James and Zerelda Jaems in Clay Co., MO, and in 1850 the father, Robert S. James, left his family and joined the Cal. gold rush, and shortly afterward, in Aug. 1850, he died. FOURTEEN YEARS LATER, ON JAN. 21, 1864, STEPHEN COURTNEY SIGNED ENLISTMENT PAPERS FOR HIS SON, J.L. COURTNEY, WHEN HE ENLISTED IN THE UNION ARMY IN WARRENSBURG, MO. JLC WAS UNDERAGE AND HIS FATHER'S CONSENT WAS NEEDED. THIS IS A DOCUMENTED FACT, OF WHICH I HAVE COPIES FROM GOV'T FILES. I have copies of JLC's military record, including muster reports up to Aug. 1865.
About Shirley's recollections about grandson Noah: I was at the probation of Grandpa's will in 1943. At the hearing and afterward at JLC's home, I saw nothing of the dissension Noah speaks of, though I was not always present when Noah's mother and 2 sisters were together. As to JLC's wealth, I can assure you that in the division of the estate, I saw nothing of the "very wealthy" thing. Present at the probation was Ida Courtney Dorsett, her 2 sisters, a son Byron Courtney, and grandchildren.
As to Shirley's comment at the last hearing about disgrace at being a James descendant, I am simply a proud JLC descendant, and the overwhelming, proven, and documented evidence debunks all the hearsay, folklore, and questionable tactics we have seen. It's a pity everyone has not read Mae Courtney Thompson's (JLC's grandaughter) paper about the Jim Courtney she knew. Mae knew him better than anyone else alive today; she lived on his place with him and saw all and every side of him.
Regarding the Austin Police's exam. of one photo provided by a Shelton "that had obviously been retouched..." The Austin Police have never seen the original 8x10 photo that I, as well as a Kansas descendant, possess, and I can assure everyone that my studio picture has never been tampered with. I AM THE SHELTON APPARENTLY REFERRED TO. The Falls Co. Court was presented with truthful, accurate testimony and photos that showed the manipulation surrounding Duke's photo of JLC, his mother, and her 4 sons.
