Kathy,

The marriage record of Stephen and Diannah is a good find but in no way proves or disproves Betty's claim. Yes, I think this record is a discovery. America was always here but until Christopher Columbus found it, it was not "discovered." It does seem odd that for years researchers have overlooked this particular marriage document. I do wonder why.

Let me clarify. Betty has not said, Stephen and Diannah were never married nor has she said that they never had a son named James L. Courtney. She has said that her grandfather was not James L. Courtney, and that she feels from what she knows that he was in fact Jesse James.

Yes Kathy, I do understand your point. If there is documented proof of a marriage in 1845 and an obituary in 1882 referring to the marriage then Stephen and Diannah should have been continuously married for 37 years.

Case closed? No, I believe there is a lot more to the story. I for one seriously doubt that the two who were married in 1845 were the same couple in 1882. Has anyone seen a picture of Stephen and Diannah together? Why did Stephen suddenly “get religion” and then immediately start preaching? Does that seem like a reasonable task? Why the name change and the sudden moves? You've got an opinion and I have an opinion, but what is true? I believe the truth is yet to be “discovered,” but we are getting closer to understanding what has been there all the time. If there were a cover-up then the person submitting the information for the obituary would protect it. Even if they were the same couple for 37 years, what does this have to do with James L. Courtney's switch with Jesse James?

I look forward to hear from you.

David Hedgpeth
