My Great grand father was also Eli Courtney and even though what I knew about him was that he was married to one Nancy Dykes and also another marriage to a Martha. What interests me is that it has always be my belief that there was another marriage and that his name was not Eli, but a nickname. He was born in 1837 in Ms. and died in Livinston Parish, La. Until now, after searching since 1990, this is the first information that even comes close. I was told by a daughter of BenCourtney that Uncle Eli came to visit with an old indian gentlemen but she wasn't sure that he was Uncle Eli or just being respectful. Ben was the son of William Courtney and he and Eli owned property next to one another. William was married to a women from Amite County, Ms. Could they be brothers? Any help you can give me would be greatly appreciated.
