Dear Marybelle,

I recently read your response to my earlier Coursey query on the Genforum page.

I have court records of William and John Coursey sueing for their inheritance against the estate of James Tutt who married Elizabeth, widow of James Coursey.  The suit was brought against William Thurmond, one of the forefathers/uncles of Strom Thurmond.  Evidently they did not get the inheritance due them when their father died in 1799, as they were minors.  I have not found all of the records of this case, or the conclusion, but have several pages of copies of letters to the court by the two brothers, who say they are the only surviving children of James Coursey, and from Wm. Thurmond who was appointed administrator of the property.  I don't yet understand all of the legal terms or exactly what was going on yet, and have not had time recently due to elderly parents and in-laws to follow it up.

Have wondered where James Tutt and Elizabeth went, and what became of them.  It seems from the information that I have that Elizabeth died a year or so before James Tutt and that they went to Ga.

My mother was a Coursey prior to marrying my father, so this is a very direct line for me.  I have been unable to connect my proven gg-grandfather John Franklin Coursey b. 1838 to any of the earlier Coursey's for sure.  There is a male of his age, b. ca 1838 in the 1840 census son of Ewell Coursey;  in 1850 a John of same age, in household with a Wil Coursey and Elizabeth.  Then in 1860 he is in the household of a Newell Coursey same age with Elizabeth of same age.  I am assuming at this time that Ewell of 1840, Wil of 1850, and Newell of 1870 are the same.

This could mean that Ewell (William) is the son of the William or John who were children of James Coursey and Elizabeth Coursey who later married James Tutt.    Or he could have been the actual son of James as in 1840 his birthdate is listed as ca 1815 and would have been a minor when his father died in 1799.

You listed the following: "Elizabeth Coursey to her children William Coursey, James Coursey, Lewis Coursey, Sampson Coursey, Matty Coursey, John Coursey."  I really believe somehow that I connect to this family, but I cannot find any proof.

Maybe in your Tutt data, there is more Coursey data.  Can you help out?

Thanks for posting your response!!

Billie Jones
