Hi Amanda:
I research the Irish Family History Foundation's database. It contains 12,000,000 surviving rcds for abt 65% of Irish counties. Rcds are increasingly sparse B4 1840, rare B4 1800.
Note 1 - Without a KNOWN county, the chance of an ancestor's rcds NOT being in this database is AT LEAST 35%.
Note 2 - Only 1/2 of Co. Cork's rcds are in this database.
Note 3 - The RC church kept control over most parish rcds from Tipperary (north). These are ONLY available thru the Tipperary Family History Research center at a substantial fee (regardless of outcome).
For And(rew) Coughlin B 1837 +/- 1 yr somewhere in Ireland with the father's forename unknown, I found 0 rcds.
For Th(omas) Coughlin B 1837 +/- 3 yrs ditto with a father forenamed Ja(mes), I found 5 rcds: 2-1835 Westmeath, 1837 Westmeath, 1838 Roscommon, and 1840 Mayo.
For Mi(chael) Coughlin B 1834 +/- 2 yrs ditto, I found 2 rcds: 1835 Wicklow, and 1835 Dublin.
For Ja(mes) Coughlin M 1830 +/- 4 yrs somewhere in Ireland, I found 19 rcds - too many to summarize here.
For Cat(herine) Howe M ditto, I found 1 rcd in 1829 Co. Limerick. This doesn't match any of the above rcds for James.
For Cat(herine) Horan M ditto, I found 7 rcds: 1828 Roscommon, 1830 Mayo, 1831 Westmeath, 2-1831 Galway, and 2-1831 Tipperary. Will leave it to you to compare this set with the set for James to see if there are POTENTIAL matches.
For James Coughlin B 1803 +/- 4 yrs somewhere in Ireland with the father's forename unknown, I found 6 rcds: 1800 Wicklow, 1801 Dublin, 1802 Limerick, 1803 Cork, 1803 Kildare, and 1807 Dublin.
For Cat(herine) Howe B 1805 ditto, I found 1 rcd in 1809 Meath.
For Cat(herine) Horan B ditto, I found 2 rcds: 1806 Longford, and 1808 Kildare.
Overall, these results are inconclusive. There is a chance that your comparison of the marriage rcds for James and Catherine will yield an exact match at the parish level. If so, the match is likely for your ancestors.
